酒

さけ · sake · JLPT N3 · noun

alcohol

酒 — alcohol

🍶 酒 = 氵 water + 酉 wine jar: the liquid kept in the jar

English already borrowed this word: sake. The left part 氵 is the water radical, and 酉 started out as a drawing of a jar for fermenting wine. In compound words it is often read しゅ, as in 日本酒 (nihonshu).

酒 — water 氵 + 酉 (wine vessel)
酒 combines 氵 (water) with 酉, an ancient pictograph of a wine jar with a narrow neck. 酉 alone originally meant fermented liquor, but as it was borrowed for the tenth earthly branch, the water radical was added to keep the 'alcoholic drink' meaning clear.
