🗳️✋ 選挙 = choose + raise (hands): picking someone by a show of hands
選 (sen) means select, as in 選ぶ erabu, to choose. 挙 (kyo) means raise or lift, as in 挙手 kyoshu, raising your hand. An election is a choosing done by people raising their hands, or casting votes.
