選手

せんしゅ · senshu · JLPT N3 · noun

team

⚽🏅 選手 = chosen + hand: the hand picked to play for the team

選 means to select, as in 選ぶ (erabu, to choose). 手 is hand, but as a suffix it marks a skilled person: 歌手 singer, 運転手 driver. So a 選手 is a skilled person who was chosen, an athlete picked for the squad.

手 — pictograph of a hand with five fingers
手 is a pictograph showing an open hand with fingers and a wrist. Early bronze and oracle bone forms clearly depict five splayed fingers, which simplified over time into the modern shape. It keeps its original meaning of 'hand' and also serves as a radical in many characters related to hand actions.
