遠慮

えんりょする · enryosuru · JLPT N4 · noun

restraint

遠慮 = far (遠) + thought (慮): thinking far ahead, so you hold back

From classical Chinese: 遠慮 meant far-sighted consideration. In Japanese it shifted to weighing how your actions affect others before acting, hence restraint or politely declining. En-ryo: en = far, ryo = consider.
