道順

みちじゅん · michijun · JLPT N2 · noun

path

🗺️ 道 (michi, road) + 順 (jun, order): the road in its proper order, i.e. the route you follow step by step

道 means road and 順 means order or sequence. Put together they give the planned sequence of roads you travel, which is an itinerary or route.

道 — 辶 (walk) + 首 (head)
Originally a compound of 辶 'walk/movement' and 首 'head', depicting a path one walks while looking ahead. The literal sense 'road, way' extended metaphorically to 'method, doctrine, the Way (Dao)'. This philosophical meaning became central in Daoist and Confucian thought.
