過ぎる

すぎる · sugiru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to go beyond

🚧 過 = pass by; 過ぎる = pass beyond the limit. Sounds like: too much? Sue-GEE-ru

The kanji 過 means to pass or go past, the same one in 過去 (the past). Tacked onto another verb stem, すぎる means too much: 食べすぎる = eat past the limit, overeat. Sound hook: sugi is also the word for cedar, a tree that overshoots all the others.
