遅刻

ちこく · chikoku · JLPT N3 · noun

lateness

⏰🐢 遅刻 = slow (遅) + the marked time (刻): you got there after the hour struck

遅 means slow or late, as in 遅い (osoi). 刻 originally meant to carve, and later came to mean a notch on a clock or a set moment, as in 時刻 (jikoku, time). So 遅刻 means behind the set time. 遅刻する means to be late.

刻 — knife radical 刂 + 亥 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The right side 亥 supplies the sound, while the knife radical 刂 on the right gives the meaning, since 刻 originally referred to carving or engraving with a blade. From 'to carve' it extended to marking time notches on a sundial, hence the modern sense of 'a moment' or 'quarter hour'.
