遅れる

おくれる · okureru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to (be) become late

⏰ oh, cruel-eru: the clock is cruel when you run late

Okureru sounds a bit like oh-cruel-eru. The kanji 遅 means slow or late, and it also gives 遅い (osoi, slow). The れる ending marks it as something that happens to you: you end up late, rather than making something late.
