🐦 進 = 辶 road/movement + 隹 bird: a bird can't walk backwards, only advance
辶 is the movement radical, also seen in 道 (road) and 近 (near). 隹 means short-tailed bird, and the classic hook is that birds only go forward. 進める is the transitive form, meaning you push something forward. 進む means you go forward yourself.
