造船
ぞうせん · zousen · JLPT N2 · noun
shipbuilding
🚢 造 = build + 船 = ship, so 造船 = build + ship = shipbuilding
The same 造 (build) appears in 製造 (manufacture), and the same 船 (ship) appears in 船長 (ship captain). Both parts are reusable.
造 — 辶 (walk) + 告 (tell/announce)
造 combines the walking radical 辶 with 告 (announce), which also gives the sound. Originally it meant 'to go and report to,' then 'to reach' or 'arrive at.' Over time the meaning shifted to 'to make' or 'to build,' the sense most common today.
船 — boat radical 舟 + 㕣 (phonetic)
船 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 舟 depicts a boat and gives the meaning, while the right side 㕣 originally suggested the sound. Together they refer to a ship or vessel, a meaning that has stayed stable since early seal script.
