逆様

さかさま · sakasama · JLPT N2 · noun

upside down

🦇 逆様 = 逆 (gyaku: opposite, reverse) + 様 (sama: way, state), so the state of being turned the opposite way

逆 means reverse or contrary, and 様 marks a manner or state. Together they name the state of being turned the opposite way round, which is why sakasama also means upside down.

逆 — 辶 walk + 屰 (inverted 大 person)
逆 combines the walking radical 辶 with 屰, a pictograph of an upside-down person. The original sense was 'to meet, go against the flow,' as if walking toward someone coming the opposite way. From this it extended to mean 'reverse, contrary, disobey.'
