退ける

どける · dokeru · JLPT N2 · verb-ichidan

to put something out of the way

退ける = 退 (retreat, step back) + ける (to kick/push away): shove something back out of the way.

退く means to step aside or withdraw. Adding the transitive ending ける turns it into an active verb: you make something step aside, so you dislodge it.

退 — walk radical 辶 + 艮 (stop/halt)
退 combines the walking/movement radical 辶 with 艮, which carries a sense of stopping or turning back. Together they depict the action of moving backward or withdrawing. The original sense of retreating or stepping back has remained stable through history.
