ついか · tsuika · JLPT N2 · noun

addition

📎 追 (follow) + 加 (add) = something added on after: an add-on or appendix

追 means chase or follow, and 加 means add. Together, ついか is an extra part that comes after the main thing and gets added onto it, like a 📎 clipped to the end of a document.

追 — 辶 (walk) + 𠂤 (small mound/heap)
Originally a semantic-phonetic compound: 辶 ('walk/movement') gives the meaning of going after something, while 𠂤 supplied the ancient sound. Early bronze inscriptions show it meaning to chase or pursue an enemy. The modern senses — 'pursue,' 'chase after,' 'retroactively' — all extend from this original idea of following in motion.

加 — force 力 + mouth 口
加 is traditionally analyzed as a compound of 力 (strength) and 口 (mouth), suggesting boasting or exaggerating one's effort with words. From this it extended to the meaning 'to add' or 'increase'. Today it is used broadly for addition, both literal and figurative.
