追いかける

おいかける · oikakeru · JLPT N2 · verb-ichidan

to chase or run after someone

🐕🐈 追い (chase) + かける (dash off) = yell Oi! and run after them

追う (ou) on its own means to pursue. Add かける, the same one as in 出かける (to head out), and you get setting off after someone. Oi! is just what you'd shout at someone you're running after.

追 — 辶 (walk) + 𠂤 (small mound/heap)
Originally a semantic-phonetic compound: 辶 ('walk/movement') gives the meaning of going after something, while 𠂤 supplied the ancient sound. Early bronze inscriptions show it meaning to chase or pursue an enemy. The modern senses — 'pursue,' 'chase after,' 'retroactively' — all extend from this original idea of following in motion.
