迷惑

めいわく · meiwaku · JLPT N3 · noun

trouble

📢 meiwaku sounds like may wake you: a noisy neighbour is a real 迷惑

迷 means lost or astray and 惑 means confused or misled, so the word first meant bewilderment. In Japanese it shifted to the trouble you cause others, as in 迷惑をかける, to be a bother to someone.

迷 — 辶 (walk) + 米 (rice/mǐ, phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The 辶 component (walking/road) gives the meaning of going astray on a path, while 米 (mǐ) supplies the sound. Originally referring to losing one's way while traveling, it later extended to mean confused, lost, or fascinated/captivated by something.
