近視

きんし · kinshi · JLPT N3 · noun

myopia

👓 近視 = near + sight: you see only what is near

近 (kin) means near and 視 (shi) means to look or see, as in 視力 (eyesight). Put together, near-seeing is exactly nearsightedness: close things are sharp, far things blur.

近 — 辶 (walk) + 斤 (axe, phonetic)
近 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The 辶 radical signals movement or distance, while 斤 (axe) supplies the sound. Together they convey the idea of a short distance to walk, hence 'near' or 'close'.
