辞める

やめる · yameru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to retire

辞 = taking formal leave (辞任 resignation); same sound as 止める, to stop

辞 means to decline or take formal leave, as in 辞任 (resignation) and 辞退 (declining an offer). 辞める is leaving a job or post. The same sound written 止める means stopping an action, so the kanji tells you which kind of quitting it is.

辞 — 舌 (tongue) + 辛 (bitter/blade)
Originally written 辭, depicting hands sorting tangled threads beside 辛 (a knife or judgment), meaning to settle disputes with words. The modern simplified form replaces the left side with 舌 (tongue), reinforcing the speech sense. Meanings extended from 'legal statement' to 'words, phrases, to take leave.'
