軒

のき · noki · JLPT N3 · noun

eaves

🏠 軒 = 車 cart + 干 pole: a cart's raised front, later a roof's jutting edge

The character first meant a carriage whose front curved upward. That jutting shape later named the roof edge that overhangs a wall. のき sounds like no key: you can shelter under the eaves without a key. Read as けん, 軒 also counts houses.
