車

くるま · kuruma · JLPT N5 · noun

car

🚗 kuruma: from kuru-kuru, the sound of turning round — a thing that rolls

Japanese uses kuru-kuru for something spinning round and round, and kuruma is traditionally linked to that root: the thing that goes round. The kanji 車 began as a cart seen from above — axle through the middle, a wheel at each end.
