越す
こす · kosu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to go over
⛰️ kosu sounds like cross; 越 has 走 (run) on the left: run across, go over
The 走 (run) radical shows up in movement words like 起 and 超 (to exceed). The usual phrase is 山を越す, to cross a mountain. It also covers getting past a point in time, as in 冬を越す, to get through the winter.
越 — 走 (run) + 戉 (axe, phonetic)
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 走 ('to run, go') gives the meaning of crossing or passing over, while 戉 (an ancient axe) supplies the sound. From 'to stride across' it extended to 'exceed, surpass,' and was later borrowed as the name of the ancient Yue state and people in southern China.
