❓ 質問 = substance (質) + ask (問): asking to get at the substance
質 means substance or quality, as in 品質 (quality). 問 means ask, built from a gate 門 with a mouth 口 inside: a mouth calling at the gate. A shitsumon is asking after the substance of a matter.
