👍 賛成 = praise/assist (賛) + become (成): backing that makes a plan happen
賛 means to praise or lend support, as in 賛美 (praise). 成 means to become or accomplish, as in 成功 (success). Lending your support so a proposal succeeds = approval. Its opposite is 反対 (hantai), opposition.
成 — 戊 (halberd/weapon) + 丁 (nail/man)
Originally a pictograph of a halberd or axe-like weapon, suggesting the act of completing a task by force. Over time it shifted from 'to subdue' to the broader meaning 'to accomplish' or 'to become'. The 丁 element inside also hints at the chéng sound.
