貧しい

まずしい · mazushii · JLPT N3 · i-adj

poor

🪙 貧 = divide 分 + shell-money 貝: money split up until little is left

The kanji 貧 puts 分 (to divide) on top of 貝 (a cowrie shell, the old sign for money). Money divided into ever smaller shares leaves you poor. For the sound, mazushii is close to ma's sushi: too poor to afford ma's sushi.
