豊富
ほうふ · houfu · JLPT N3 · na-adj
plenty
🌾💰 豊富 = bountiful (豊) + wealth (富): riches heaped on riches
豊 means a rich harvest, as in 豊作 (bumper crop). 富 means wealth, as in 富士 (Fuji). Put two kinds of plenty together and you get abundance. Sound hook: houfu, a whole haul full.
富 — roof 宀 + one 一 + mouth 口 + field 田
Originally a pictograph of a tall jar full of grain or wine under a roof, symbolizing a household with abundant stores. The lower part 畐 depicted the full vessel and also gave the sound, while 宀 (roof) marked the home. Over time the meaning shifted from 'full vessel' to 'wealth, abundance, rich.'
