豆
まめ · mame · JLPT N3 · noun
bean
🫘 Known from edamame: 枝 eda (branch) + 豆 mame (beans) = beans on the branch
Edamame are soybeans sold still on their stems, which is why the name means branch beans. The character 豆 first meant a tall food dish with a stem. Chinese later borrowed it for the word bean because the two words sounded alike.
