谷

たに · tani · JLPT N3 · noun

valley

谷 — valley

🏞️ 谷 = 八 parting + 口 mouth: the open mouth where hills split apart

The top strokes are water spreading out as it leaves the hills, and 口 is the opening it pours through. For the sound, tani rhymes with canyon-y: a tani is a canyon or valley. The same kanji appears in Shibuya 渋谷, which literally means astringent valley.
