講演

こうえん · kouen · JLPT N3 · noun

lecture

🎤 講演 = explain (講) + perform (演): a talk given on stage

講 has the speech radical 言 and means to explain, as in 講義 (lecture course). 演 means to perform, as in 演劇 (play). A 講演 is a public talk. It sounds the same as 公園 (park), so the 言 in 講 tells you this one is about speaking.

演 — water 氵 + 寅 (yín, phonetic)
演 is a semantic-phonetic compound: the water radical 氵 gives the meaning, originally referring to water flowing far and spreading out, while 寅 supplies the sound. From 'water extending' it broadened to 'develop, elaborate, perform,' as in unfolding a story or acting out a play.
