諦める

あきらめる · akirameru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to give up

🏳️ From 明らめる, to see clearly: once the truth is clear, you let it go

諦 is the Buddhist word for truth, as in the Four Noble Truths. The older verb 明らめる meant to make something clear. Seeing a situation clearly meant accepting it, and over time that came to mean giving up.
