請求
せいきゅう · seikyuu · JLPT N3 · noun
claim
🧾 請求 = ask + seek: formally asking for what you are owed
請 (こう, to ask or beg) plus 求 (もとめる, to seek). In everyday Japanese it is mostly about money: 請求書 is an invoice or bill, and 請求する means to bill someone or file a claim. Sound hook: say-kyuu, say your claim and join the queue to collect.
求 — pictograph of a fur garment
求 originally depicted a fur coat or pelt, with hairs hanging from the sides. It was later borrowed phonetically to mean 'seek' or 'request,' and the original 'fur' meaning was taken over by 裘. Today 求 almost always means to seek, beg, or pursue.
