誕生

たんじょう · tanjou · JLPT N3 · noun

birth

👶🎂 誕 nativity + 生 life, being born = birth; 誕生日 tanjoubi = birthday

Both kanji are about coming into life: 誕 (tan) means nativity and 生 (jou) means life or to be born. Add 日 (day) and you get 誕生日, tanjoubi, birthday. It is a common word you will hear in every Happy Birthday song.

生 — sprout 屮 above earth 土
Originally a pictograph showing a young plant sprouting from the ground, with 屮 (a sprout) above 土 (earth). The core meaning is 'to be born, to grow, to live,' which extends to 'raw, unripe, unfamiliar.' The modern form has simplified the sprout shape but preserves the image of new growth emerging from soil.
