許す

ゆるす · yurusu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to approve

🔓 ゆるす shares a root with ゆるい (loose): loosen the rules to permit

Yurusu comes from the same root as yurumu (to slacken) and yurui (loose). To allow something is to loosen your hold on it. The kanji 許 has 言 (words) on the left, so permission is something granted with words. 許す can also mean to forgive.
