計画

けいかくする · keikakusuru · JLPT N4 · noun

plan

📅📝 計画 = measure (計) + mark out lines (画): measure, then draw it up

計 means to measure or calculate, as in 時計 (clock) and 計算 (calculation). 画 means to draw or mark out a stroke, as in 映画 (film). A plan is something calculated and then drawn up. Add する to make the verb: to plan.

画 — hand 一 + field 田 + frame 凵
Originally a pictograph of a hand holding a brush drawing boundaries around a field, depicting the act of marking out land. The top once showed a brush (聿), and 田 represents the field being divided. Over time it came to mean 'to draw, paint' and also 'a stroke' in characters.
