計

けい · kei · JLPT N3 · noun

plan

🧮 計 = 言 speech + 十 ten: counting out loud up to ten gives a total

The left part 言 means words or speech, and the right part 十 means ten. Counting out loud gives a sum, and working out numbers is also how you plan. Kei sounds like the English word key: the key figure is the total.
