🔭🔍 観察 = view (観) + discern (察): look closely and work out what you see
観 means to view or watch, as in 観光 (sightseeing). 察 means to perceive or infer, as in 警察 (police) and 推察 (guess). Together they mean watching carefully in order to understand, which is what observation means.
