見送り

みおくり · miokuri · JLPT N3 · noun

seeing one off

👋🚉 見送り = see (見る) + send off (送る): watching someone go

見 (mi) is from 見る, to see or watch, and 送り (okuri) is from 送る, to send. Put together, you watch someone leave, for example at a station or airport. The verb form is 見送る (miokuru), to see someone off.

送 — 辶 (walk) + 关 (simplified from 灷, fire/torch)
Originally depicted hands holding a torch to escort someone on a journey, combined with the 'walk' radical 辶. The right side 关 is a simplification of an older form showing fire being carried. The core meaning evolved from 'escort/see off' to the broader sense of 'send' or 'give as a gift.'
