🎭 見 = see + 掛け (from 掛ける, to hang over) = how something looks from the outside

Contrast with 中身 (contents) or 本当 (true nature). 見掛けによらず means 'not judging by appearance,' as in 見掛けによらず親切 (kind, despite how he looks).
