裸

はだか · hadaka · JLPT N3 · noun

naked

🛀 衤 clothing + 果 fruit: a fruit stripped of its clothing = naked

衤 is the clothing radical, also found in 被 (quilt) and 裙 (skirt). 果 (fruit) gives the sound, which is luǒ in Chinese. Together they mean the body as bare as a peeled fruit. 裸足 (rasoku) means barefoot.

裸 — clothes radical 衤 + fruit 果
A semantic-phonetic compound: 衤 (clothing) gives the meaning, while 果 (guǒ) supplies the sound. Originally meaning 'to strip off clothing,' it came to mean 'naked' or 'bare.' The clothing radical ironically marks the absence of clothes.
