裂ける
さける · sakeru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan
to split
👕 裂 = row 列 + clothes 衣: cloth torn into strips
Sakeru sounds like sock: a sock that splits at the heel. Don't mix it up with 避ける (sakeru, to avoid), which has the same sound. The 衣 (clothing) radical at the bottom of 裂 tells you this one is about fabric tearing.
裂 — 列 (liè, phonetic) + 衣 (clothing)
A semantic-phonetic compound: 衣 'clothing' gives the meaning and 列 supplies the sound. The original sense was tearing or splitting cloth, which broadened to 'split, crack, rupture' in general. The 衣 component is written split around 列 rather than on the side.
