裂く
さく · saku · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to tear
👕 裂 = 列 (split into rows) + 衣 (cloth): cloth torn into strips; saku = rip a sack
The top of 裂 is 列, which began as a blade cutting bone apart (刂 is the knife). The bottom is 衣, clothing. So the kanji means fabric split in pieces. For the sound, saku is close to sack: you saku a sack open.
裂 — 列 (liè, phonetic) + 衣 (clothing)
A semantic-phonetic compound: 衣 'clothing' gives the meaning and 列 supplies the sound. The original sense was tearing or splitting cloth, which broadened to 'split, crack, rupture' in general. The 衣 component is written split around 列 rather than on the side.
