被る
かぶる · kaburu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan
to be covered with
🧢 kaburu shares its root with kabuto (helmet): what goes over your head
被る is used for things that go on or over the head, like hats, helmets and hoods, so 帽子を被る means to put on a hat. It also means to be covered with something, such as dust, water or blame. For shoes or trousers Japanese uses 履く instead.
被 — clothes radical 衤 + 皮 (skin/hide)
Originally a semantic-phonetic compound: 衤 (clothing) gives the meaning 'blanket/quilt', while 皮 supplies the sound. From 'covering' it extended to 'cover oneself with', then grammaticalized into the passive marker 'by', its most common modern use.
