袋
ふくろ · fukuro · JLPT N3 · noun
bag
🛍️ 袋 = 代 (sound hint, tai) + 衣 (cloth): a cloth bag
The 衣 at the bottom marks things made of cloth, and 代 on top gives the on'yomi たい, as in 手袋 (tebukuro, glove) and 紙袋 (kamibukuro, paper bag). Fukuro sounds like full crow: a sack full of crows.
袋 — 代 (dài, phonetic) + 衣 (clothing)
袋 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The bottom 衣 'clothing/cloth' gives the meaning, since bags were originally made of cloth, while 代 on top supplies the sound 'dài'. It has long meant 'bag, sack, pouch'.
