表面
ひょうめん · hyoumen · JLPT N3 · noun
surface
🌊 表面 = outer side (表) + face (面): the face a thing shows outward
表 (ひょう) means the outside or front, as in 表 (おもて), the front side. 面 (めん) means face or surface, as in 仮面, mask. Together they name the outward face of something: its surface, or how things look on the outside.
表 — fur 毛 on top + garment 衣 below
Originally depicted an outer fur garment, with 毛 (fur) above 衣 (clothing), showing the hairy outside of a coat. From 'outer garment' it extended to mean 'outside, surface,' then 'to show, express, display,' and later 'table, chart' as something laid out on the surface.
面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
