衣食住

いしょくじゅう · ishokujuu · JLPT N2 · noun

clothing and shelter

👘🍚 衣食住 = clothes (衣) + food (食) + dwelling (住): life's three basics

Each kanji is one need: 衣 (i) is clothing, as in 衣服; 食 (shoku) is eating, as in 食事; 住 (juu) is living somewhere, as in 住所. Japanese puts clothing first, while English says food, clothing and shelter.

住 — person radical 亻 + 主 (master/zhǔ, phonetic)
住 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 亻 (person) gives the meaning—something a person does—while 主 supplies the sound, originally 'zhǔ' (master, a lamp standing in place). Together they suggest a person staying put, yielding the senses 'to live, dwell, reside, stop'.
