街角
まちかど · machikado · JLPT N2 · noun
corner
街 (street) + 角 (corner) = street corner, read machi + kado
街 is read まち (town, street) and 角 is read かど (corner). Joined as 街角 they mean the corner of a street. The same 角 appears in 角度, meaning angle.
街 — 行 (go) + 圭 (jade tablets, phonetic)
街 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The outer 行 originally depicted a crossroads and gives the meaning 'road' or 'thoroughfare'. The inner 圭 supplies the sound. Together they denote a street or public way through a town.
角 — pictograph of a horn
角 is a pictograph of an animal's horn, with early oracle-bone forms clearly showing the curved, ridged shape of a horn. From 'horn' it extended to mean corner, angle, and by metaphor a role or part (as in a stage role). The reading jiǎo covers most of these senses.
