行く
いく; ゆく · iku; yuku · JLPT N5 · verb-godan
to go
🚶 iku sounds like eek! — eek, I have to go
行 began as a drawing of a crossroads, the place you pass through when you go somewhere. The く ending marks it as a verb. Yuku is the older, literary reading of the same word, still heard in songs and set phrases.
行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
