衆
しゅう · shuu · JLPT N3 · noun
multitude
👥 Bottom part 乑 = three people bunched together, so a crowd, the masses
In old script the bottom of 衆 was three 人 (person) shapes, the usual way kanji write 'many'. The top was a sun or eye over them. You'll see it in 大衆 (taishuu, the general public) and 民衆 (minshuu, the people).
