舞台
ぶたい · butai · JLPT N3 · noun
stage
🎭 舞台 = dance + platform: the raised platform where performers dance
舞 (bu) means dance and 台 (tai) means platform or stand, as in 台所 (kitchen). A stage is the platform you dance on. It also works figuratively: 舞台 can mean the scene or setting where events happen.
舞 — dancer with tassels 無 + opposing feet 舛
舞 is a pictograph of a person dancing while holding ox-tail tassels or feathered streamers in both hands; the upper part 無 originally depicted the dancer with ornaments, and 舛 below shows two feet stepping in opposite directions. When 無 was borrowed to mean 'not/none,' 舛 was added to preserve the original 'dance' meaning.
台 — mouth 口 + 厶 (private)
Originally depicted a raised platform or terrace, suggesting elevation and a place to stand. The character later extended to mean stage, podium, or station. In modern usage it also serves as the simplified form of 臺 (platform) and 颱 (typhoon), and names Taiwan (台灣).
