🚲 自転車 = self + turn + vehicle: the vehicle you turn yourself
自 (ji) means self, 転 (ten) means turn or roll, 車 (sha) means vehicle. A bicycle is the vehicle whose wheels roll by your own effort. Same 車 as in 電車 (densha, electric train) and 自動車 (jidōsha, car).

自 originally depicted a human nose, shown frontally with the bridge and nostrils. Ancient Chinese pointed to their own nose to mean 'me,' so 自 shifted to mean 'self' or 'oneself.' A new character 鼻 was later created to carry the original 'nose' meaning.
