臨む

🌊 臨 = eye (臣) + person + 品 items: someone leaning over to look down at things
It is read the same way as 望む (to hope): you nozomu what you hope for by facing it head-on. 海に臨む = to look out on the sea; 式に臨む = to attend a ceremony. The same kanji appears in 臨時 (rinji, temporary).
