膜

まく · maku · JLPT N3 · noun

membrane

🫧 月 flesh + 莫 sound: maku, a thin skin, like a mac raincoat over you

The 月 on the left is the flesh radical, used for body parts; 莫 gives the sound (mo in Chinese). So 膜 is a thin skin of tissue. Maku sounds like mac, a raincoat that is just a thin waterproof film. A soap bubble is a film too.

膜 — flesh radical 月 (肉) + 莫 (phonetic)
膜 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The flesh radical 月 (a form of 肉) signals body tissue, while 莫 supplies the sound 'mò/mó'. It originally referred to thin layers of tissue in the body, and now broadly means 'membrane' or 'film', as in 薄膜 (thin film) and 角膜 (cornea).
